Can I use a slatted bed base with a metal bed frame?

I have a twin instamatic metal bed frame. Could I buy a slatted bed base (wooden) from ikea to use instead of buying a box spring??

    For the only alternative to box spring would be on top of the slats to form one smooth solid surface for the only alternative to be on top of 12 plywood on top of 12 plywood on top.
